Michael Coleman and Joshua Smith

at the Jazz School

in Berkeley

Saturday December 3, at 8 pm

Tenor saxophonist Joshua Smith and pianist Michael Coleman have been making music together frequently for the past four years, often in a duo setting as well as with their trio, Birdhead. They use the duo format as a way to explore various paths of musical expression without the help or constraints of a traditional rhythm section. Their repertoire ranges from old ballads and tin pan alley hits to aggressive pointillistic free improvisations that utilize extended techniques. Smith is best known for his work with Birth, an innovative band based out of Cleveland/NYC. He has played, toured and recorded with many great improvisers including Joe Maneri, Nate Wooley, and Cuong Vu. Smith gigs frequently around the Bay area with his own groups and in a recently formed quartet lead by Scott Amendola. Coleman is known locally for his work with the collective trio Beep and as a sideman for a multitude of Bay Area composers and performers. -----------------------------------
